How to find the right IT company for your profile
To find the right company to start working isn`t always an easy task. In fact, this can even be a difficult and time-consuming process, mainly because we must make sure there is Work-Life Harmony and the opportunities to join innovative projects do not come every day!
New generations of professionals that are now starting to work show some specific motivations, characteristics and priorities quite different from the ones from the previous generations. The truth is that, although they are motivated by the need for greater financial stability, remuneration is not everything for this generation. Increasingly, they are looking for other more important things like organizations that promote effective interpersonal relationships and can implement a flexible work set to reduce burnout.
On the other hand, when choosing the right place to work, we must also consider the IT market's current context. There is a shortage of talent in IT, both in Portugal and in the rest of Europe, that will help things to become a little easier for new employees.
In fact, according to a recent study for Manpower Group - Talent Shortage Survey 2022 - IT and data jobs are the most wanted ones – with a total of 26% - by Portuguese organizations. On the other hand, 67% of Portuguese employers have difficulty finding the right candidates and 18% are talking about a huge difficulty when hiring. All these numbers reveal a talent shortage of 85%. If we take a look worldwide, Forbes adds cybersecurity and UX design to the list of the most wanted professionals nowadays.
So, what should one consider when looking for an IT company to work? We give you some ideas:
- Get to know the company: First things first…when you are looking for a place to work and have some organizations under consideration, you must identify the area of expertise on that company, get to know some success stories of projects already done and listen to current customers. Why don’t you take a look into the company’s Linkedin or the posts of former employees? It is, for sure, an excellent starting point;
- Identify organizational culture: As a candidate, you have some believes, values and principles that guide your live and those must be aligned with the values and principles of the company you are going to work in;
- Search for media presence: It is also very important to understand the levels of credibility and notoriety the organization has in the market. Google it, look for some news on the media and social networks as it will give you a pretty good idea of what they are doing. You should also know the company’s spokespersons and understand their market views and methodologies;
- Do they have specific programs for employees?: Taking into account some important projects and a client`s diversity is key to bring you close to a new employer;
- Choose companies that promote activities: Do the organizations have programmed diverse activities that provide moments of interaction, integration and well-being between their teams? If so, that is an important addition to your list. Look specifically at companies that offer psychotherapy sessions, yoga, and health programs, as it reveals a genuine concern for the balance and well-being of their employees;
- Prioritize companies with innovation projects and top technology: Companies focused on continuous growth and that work with the latest IT developments are those meant to survive in the present competitive market.
All in all, let us highlight the importance of finding a company well aligned with the employee's goals and values and, at the same time, also focused on the development and implementation of relevant projects. In this case, it is easier to the employee not only add solid and more strategic results, but also improve their professional path and get real value out of the work.
Companies with specific talent management strategies, like Outsourcing companies, are, somehow, important places to work in, and the same goes to those that also have strong retention policies mirrored in career growth opportunities or some work life balance activities.
