Job description

We are looking for a Data Engineer – SAS Migration for a hybrid project, minimum 2 days per week on-site, in Lisbon.

About the Role

You will support a Data & Analytics team at a financial institution currently executing the decommissioning of SAS and migration of legacy analytical workloads to a cloud-based Data Platform (ADP). This is a hands-on, execution-focused role with immediate contribution expected from day one.

Working directly with business data analysts and the engineering team, you will translate and optimise legacy SAS logic into SQL and Python solutions — reviewing, challenging and simplifying complex or outdated logic rather than migrating it as-is. This role is explicitly technical and execution-focused, not a business reporting or dashboard-building function.

The ideal candidate is technically rigorous and autonomous, able to bridge business intent and engineering execution without losing sight of cloud cost efficiency. Strong communication in both Portuguese and English is essential to engage effectively with business analysts and engineering teams.

Main Responsibilities

Analyse existing SAS queries and SAS Query Builder logic and translate them into optimised SQL and Python solutions for ADP.
Review, challenge and simplify complex or outdated logic rather than performing like-for-like migration.
Act as the technical bridge between business data analysts and the engineering team: understand the intended purpose of each report or process from business teams, then work solely on the underlying code, leaving business validation to the analysts.
Ensure all migrated solutions are cost-aware and optimised for cloud execution on Azure Synapse, applying correct filtering and access patterns to avoid unnecessary data scans and excessive cloud consumption.

Requirements

Mandatory

Strong SQL and Python development skills, including query optimisation.
Hands-on experience with Azure Synapse and cloud data environments.
Minimum 2 to 3 years of relevant experience.
Proficiency in Portuguese and English.

Nice to Have

Prior exposure to SAS.
Experience with Power BI.
Background in insurance or financial services.
