Senior Data Engineer
Remote
Job description
We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer for a full remote project from Portugal.
About the Role
You will be joining an agile, collaborative team where your voice matters as much as your code. You won't just be managing infrastructure — you'll be a technical partner helping build resilient systems that scale.
You'll be working closely with leadership and clients, so clear communication and a collaborative spirit are key.
Main Responsibilities
- Design and operate robust batch and streaming ingestion pipelines from heterogeneous source systems, including embedding pipelines, vector store ingestion, retrieval feeds and feature stores.
- Manage physical modelling and storage across lakes, lakehouses and warehouses, optimising for partitioning, cost and query performance.
- Oversee orchestration, automated testing, observability and alerting, while driving incident response, post-incident correction and root cause prevention.
- Enforce data contracts with producing teams, control schema drift and manage access security, retention policies, auditable lineage and compliance obligations (including GDPR).
- Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and CI/CD for data workloads, alongside rigorous environment management.
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of experience as a data engineer, with a proven track record of end-to-end delivery in fast-paced environments.
- Demonstrated experience building and maintaining real-time architectures, data quality frameworks and ML data infrastructure in production.
- Expert proficiency in Python and advanced SQL.
- Production depth in at least one major cloud provider (AWS, GCP or Azure).
- Experience with distributed processing and streaming technologies such as Spark, Kafka, Kinesis or Pub/Sub.
- Experience with modern data platforms such as Snowflake, BigQuery, Azure Fabric, Databricks or Redshift.
- Proficiency in orchestration tools such as Airflow or Dagster (or equivalent).
- Familiarity with data quality frameworks such as Great Expectations, Soda or Monte Carlo.
- Professional fluency in English, written and verbal.
- Strong understanding of complex engineering and architectural principles, including CI/CD workflows and version control (Git).
Nice to Have
- Evidence of transferring cloud principles to a second cloud platform.
- Experience with infrastructure and DevOps tooling: Terraform, Docker and Kubernetes.
- Experience leveraging AI coding assistants (Claude Code, Copilot, Cursor or equivalent) to accelerate delivery.
